Valve has just announced the next instalment on the Counter-Strike series called Counter-Strike Global Offensive or CS: GO for short.

The game is being developed for PC, PS3, XBOX 360 and Mac and is set to be released in early 2012. The game will feature new weapons, new maps and new characters while also updating fan favourite maps such as de_dust, de_train or de_inferno. The game will focus heavily in the gaming competitive side (presumably for e-Sports success) with maps created and updated for optimal 5vs5 competition with the addition of leaderboards and other social tools. Overall it seems that Valve will gather the best of both Counter-Strike 1.6 and Counter-Strike Source to create the best Counter-Strike so far while maintaining the classic gameplay that gathered millions of fans around the world.

The game will apparently only be distributed through digital platforms such as Steam and PSN which may lead us to think that there is a chance it will be free to play just as Valve did recently with Team Fortress 2.

To think that something like Counter-Strike which started as a “mod for fun” went to grow to one of the biggest on-line gaming franchises of all time is impressive. While Counter-Strike fans seems to receive these news with good eyes, Half-Life fans are not, claiming that Valve is working in every project except the next Half-Life instalment. It’s worth mentioning that the last official Half-Life series instalment (Half-Life 2: Episode Two) was launched in 2007.
